The Seattle City Council has unanimously approved an expansion of the city’s automated traffic safety camera program. The legislation will take effect 30 days after Mayor Bruce Harrell’s signature.
This new policy aims to improve safety by increasing the number of automated traffic cameras, particularly in areas with a high incidence of speeding and dangerous driving. Revenue generated from these cameras will support traffic safety initiatives and advance the city’s Vision Zero goals to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities.
The legislation also establishes a dedicated revenue fund and updates city code to reflect state law changes enacted last year. In addition, it introduces new privacy protections and notification requirements that limit public access to camera data.
City officials report that existing traffic safety cameras have already had a measurable impact. By expanding the program, the city is building on this success and taking further steps to enhance safety on Seattle’s streets.
